In pictures: Cua Ong Temple Festival kicks off

The Cua Ong Temple Festival, which was recognised as national special intangible cultural heritage in 2016, opened in Cam Pha city on March 12 or the third day of the second lunar month.

Cua Ong Temple, the venue of the event, is dedicated to Tran Quoc Tang (1252 – 1313), a hero in the resistance wars against the Mongol invaders and guarding the country’s northeastern region under the Tran Dynasty (1225 – 1400). He was the third son of General Tran Quoc Tuan, who led Dai Viet (the name of Vietnam at that time) to two of the three victories against the Mongol invaders, in 1285 and 1288.

The festival is held to commemorate Tran Quoc Tang’s contributions to defeating enemies and brought peace to the region.

The procession ritual attracts the participation of thousands of people.

The procession begins at Thuong Temple, along many streets and back to the temple grounds.

The Temple is dedicated to Tran Quoc Tang, the third son of Tran Hung Dao. He was a hero in the resistance war against the Mongol invaders under the Tran Dynasty in the 11th century.

More than 20 boats participate in the proccesion on sea.
Local people prepare their own banquets and wait for the procession to pass by. This is a great chance for them to show their respect to preceding generations and national heroes.
Teachers and students wait for the procession to pass by.
The performance "Sacred traces of relics" depicts the career of Hung Nhuong Vuong Tran Quoc Tang, the army and people under the Tran Dynasty.
Locals and tourists enjoy "quan ho" (love duets), an art form of folk music, at Baza lake.
A boat race was held during the festival.
Local people held ceremonies in their families and neighborhoods to commemorate the merits, life and career of Monsignor Hung Nhuong Vuong Tran Quoc Tang and generals of the Tran Dynasty.
The festival attracts plenty of locals and tourists.
